In 1964 Wanagama only a forest of 10 ha, and do not have biodiversity. Starting from the hope of developing a green area in the middle of a barren land, in the area Playen, Gunung Kidul. Prof. Oemi Han'in Suseno, with private capital start Wanagama forest development projects.

Forest areas through the flow of the three rivers, Oya, Sendang Ayu and Banyutibo. Wanagama currently has an area to 600 hectares, and has a lot of biodiversity, such as pine (Pinus), ebony (Diospyros celebica) Black Wood of Sulawesi, sandalwood (Santalum album) Fragrant trees, mulberry (Morus Alba) and teak (Tectona grandis). Approximately 550 species of plants.

Wanagama forest area is currently a jungle of education, which is managed by the Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta. Inside there is a hall or pendopo for a variety of activities, or a resting place for travelers. When you enter this area, you will be greeted chirp of birds and various kinds of plants. There is one tree that became a favorite of tourists, namely tree "Jati Londo". "Londo" is the local community term for foreign nationals. This tree was planted by Prince Charles in 1989 during a visit to Wanagama. Now, the route through which Prince Charles is a favorite tourist route. Besides the forest, you can visit the silkworm breeding areas, which are in the forest area Wanagama.
