Gebang temple, Hindu temple relics
GEBANG Temple, located in the Condongcatur, south of the village of GEBANG, Ngemplak district, Sleman regency, about 11 kilometers from downtown Yogyakarta. Hindu temple's discovery came from the discovery of the statue of Ganesha by local residents in November 1936. Based on the findings, the archeologist started doing research about the possibility of a temple at the site of the discovery of the statue. It is assumed that the Ganesha statue is part of a building a building. Having established the existence of a temple at the site, do further excavation, reconstruction and refurbishment, which was held from 1937 to 1939 under the leadership of Van Romondt.
Not obtained information about the historical background of the temple Gebang. However, judging from the presence of the phallus, the yoni and the statue of Ganesha, it is certain that Gebang temple is a Hindu temple relics. In addition, a high proportion at the foot of the temple indicates it was built in the period between the years 730-800 AD.
Temple Gebang is building laid out on a square base with size 5:25 x 5:25 m with 7.75 m height. The basic material used for the construction of the temple is andesite. The temple sits on top of the foot at about 2 m. There are not any sculpture at the foot of the temple.
The entrance to the temple room is located on the east side. On either side of the entrance there is a niche where the statue. In the north there is a statue niches Nandiswara while southern niches empty. Supposedly, in the niches once contained a statue of Mahakala. On the west side (the back) there is a niche filled with Ganesha statue sitting on top of a yoni with a trunk leading to the north.
Nothing found a ladder to climb to the surface of the foot in the temple hall. Although there is conjecture, the stairs are made of materials that easily fragile, like wood, but has not obtained certain information about the absence of the stairs.
In the temple there is room. In the middle of the room there is a yoni and phallus, but currently stuck on top phallus yoni gone in place. The roof of the temple compound with an erect phallus-shaped peak above the lotus.
